Hello dear internet viewer,
Oh no, yet another Othello/Reversi game? Oh yeah, because Othello has been a large part of my life, especially because I have participated and won several international tournaments on the subject, I'll never ever stop talking about it, even, if I'm not playing a lot anymore this game. Not due to lack of challenge, but I am now gone to another stage in my life. That being said, to be on another stage, it doesn't mean denying our past, this is why I still talk about, because the fact of broadening horizons for Othello it could eventually help someone who is looking to develop his skills and his perceptions… So, these articles on Othello games are yes for me a way, to explore old mentalities that seem to have been forgotten by the current Othello players, which, for those who read me, could give you some advantage against them in tournaments.
So indeed, the game that I am presenting today is an Othello who may look like, like any other else, but that its unique algorithm making able to compete at different difficulty levels; LOthello developed and published by André Rassat and Matthieu Klein in 1996 as part of a University project at Haute-Alsace in France. Please take note that any good Othello player would knows that when a game is difficult it usually mean that it won't be representative of the reality. Because the algorithms with high difficulty level, generally, seek the perfect game, while in tournaments, we seek before everything the creativity. But does the fact to quit the reality of a real game makes these games at some unnecessary high difficulty level? No, far from it! It lets you learn how to have a defensively closeminded gamestyle. In the video shown below, I had willingly opened my play too early, in order to demonstrate that this is not because you are creative that it gives you a advantage. Because the mechanistic players, are yes, easier to defeat than creative players, but precisely the fact that they are mechanistic, ensures that you can not expect that your opponent would be the kind to fall on a trap of your fantasies. The mechanistic, plays by the book, nothing more, he will never try to fool you, all he seeks, this is the perfect gameplay. Perfect gameplay which in Othello, obviously, does not exist, but the fact remains that there is still some basics to respect in order to have a winning game.
Who are André Rassat and Matthieu Klein? I have not found much information concerning mister Rassat, however, Matthew Klein, not so long after this project, he left the France to study in Quebec at Laval University in electrical engineering. So, unfortunately one of the very few candidates made in France to have had some talent in video game for other thing than the appearances, didn't continued his career in this way. It's a shame, because by its techniques and its logistics that he had used by programming that can be seen by looking at the source code document and also the explanatory thesis of the project that was accompanies the game, he had a rather unique approach that allows an almost infinite calculation process, to be able to be confronted by various types of mechanicalistic approaches. So, which can allow a creative player to develop a good defense… So just imagine if that person or must i say this developers duo had persisted in the world of video games, imagine how great the quality of games that would have been on the market later. Because those who follow me for long enough, does know that my main criticism facing the games made in France, it is the fact that the french (people of France, not to confound with the very imaginative and creative people of Quebec) are in general unable to go further than the standard. And precisely, people like mister Rassat and Klein could the mindset that would break down some barriers which would have encouraged other developers to go further than the standard… Unfortunately, this is not what has happened, although that I am very conscient that mister Klein probably currently have a very good career in electricity… I can't blame him for choosing a more stable domain and that probably, he loves more…
To conclude, the interest of this game lies mainly in the engine. Because as such, those who doesn't give a damn about Othello games will find here no interest. It is primarily aimed to people who are seeking competition in order to participate in international tournaments!
