Hello dear internet viewer,
In the years 80 and early years 90, there were many television producers who were trying to boost the popularity of their quiz show by giving mandates to the majors to develop video games. And of course, since the DOS was an accessible and evolutive platform, well it was the place of choice for this kind of game, despite the fact that the majors, ironically, did not respected the DOS. What resulted that most of these games were using outdated engine, so most of these, have not enjoyed the maximum of what the DOS should have given… The one that I am presenting today, unfortunately is no exception to the rule, but as the televised game by itself for what it represents is excellent, the game is still good, despite the fact that, it could have been better if the authors had bothered to venture into the EGA instead in the CGA. It is here the game Win, Lose or Draw based on the famous TV series that in Quebec, it is also named, Fais-moi un dessin!, developed by Softie, Inc., but Published by Hi-Tech Expressions, Inc. in 1988.
Yes, I know, for some obscure reason this very popular show lasted only 3 years everywhere where it has been adapted. And yet, this isn't the ratings who had maked this show off the air, this is not the lack of interest of artists and celebrities invited and mostly it is not the production cost, because precisely, what was great with this show it is that it was all rustic, it was purely a mix of intellectualism and family entertainment. And sponsors flocked to have their spot in the show… So that it is economically, morality, availability or social, there was no reason to stop this program at the end of only 3 years old. And we cannot say, that it is because the animators wanted to do other things, because in all its versions either in Quebec, in France, in Germany, etc. all of them lasted only 3 years old, yet given the concept it should had lasted 20 years old, this is not like transferring a television series where there's a story to follow, here, this is downright a game where you have to find words of what a member of your team is drawing…
Now, let's talk about the game itself! As said in the introduction, although its technical flawed, the concept by itself makes that we can not be wrong, so that we are sure to have a good time. But you'll still have your share of disappointments, including by knowing that you won't be able to have the role of the artist, all you do is to guess what is drawn by a CPU which seems does not seek to help us to guess, but instead mostly to mislead us. By the way as you will notice in the video, when you see the answers to some of the draw, it may take some time before you understand the link with word… Yes, they all have some kind of links, but in a real live show, the person who draws would rather seek to help you rather than at harm you… But, I understand that the idea it is that because we cannot take the role of the artist, it was needed to add a some kind of difficulty level, but still, compensate a lack by somewhat unpleasant, it's just making the things worse.
Brief, a good game by its basic concept that cannot be bad whatever how it is presented, but that has actually been botched, so, which unfortunately, you will not fully live the experience of Win, Lose or Draw. Which is sad, because it would have been so easy to make a masterpiece with a show that was already among the most-watched of the planet!
